The Reconnect project
This website is a part of a campaign for Google Web Rangers PH 2016.
Our main goal is to show that, despite the social networking, various and unnecessary forms of media and other things that cause traffic in our network, the Internet can be useful when used correctly. There is more to it than just the spam of false and unnecessary information that we place on various sites on the Internet and we hope that this website, along with our campaign, will be able to show that.
Long ago, the Internet was seen as an improvement to the human race, as a method of bringing all kinds of information in a matter of seconds. Now, people would associate the Internet with negative ideas because it is said to serve as a distraction in our learning process. And because of how careless we use it, our digital footprints tend to overlap the essence of what the Internet once was. In order to reconnect the idea that the Internet is worth more than what we think, we created the Reconnect Project.
To jumpstart our campaign, we wanted people to experience the reality of how our internet was being used in present time. We started off with a sticky note campaign. We had asked different people to write any useful information that would help others in developing their future. We didn't tell them however that over time, we were going to cover their sticky notes using distractions that you'd often see on the internet on a daily basis. We let the notes build up, people were still free to contribute to the wall as they wish, then we add in our own notes to simulate how information is regarded in the Internet.
After a few days, we asked some people to try looking for the information placed on the first day. After sifting through the pile of sticky notes, we asked them questions about the activity. We asked them what kind of information did they find, What they thought of all the other sticky notes placed on it, how they think that this represents how the internet is used, and finally, what is Digital Literacy. Through this, we were able to get people to understand Digital Literacy even better.
The next part of the campaign is the website. The sticky note campaign brought the issue to real life, but we also want to connect to the people that we cannot reach. This web site allows people to easily find resources and knowledge about different topics. And to promote the use of digital literacy, we are allowing people to place in their own tips and advice. However, in order to prevent all that knowledge from being blocked out, all posts are being monitored by the admins before being posted. We had even set up Guidelines for those who are interested in posting.
All in all, this campaign is to encourage people to maximise the internet for the better. You'll find various topics here that aren't usually discussed to you or taught to you in school. With this website, we'll build a community where we can share what is needed and bring help to those who need it the most. One click at a time.
